POEM – Glossary

In love these days

words are used in novel ways,

grammar is less precise,

style becomes mere ornament

and meretricious cant.

In love a native speaker once,

now I have no ear for idiom,

miss the new constructions,

fail to catch the foreign phrase

and adventitious trope.

In love her glossary would be no help,

for it defined in that same slippery tongue

that probed and plumbed

the deepness of my mouth

but found, it seems,

not what she said she would.
