Editorial Cartoon – Sumo Economics

Remember back twenty or so years ago how the Japanese were going to overtake

the world and in particular the United States?  This editorial

cartoon was one I just couldn’t help but do!  Of course, the

Nikkei – after hitting an all-time high of 38,957.44

on 29 December 1989 – dropped to 7054.98

by 10 March 2009, and that was a loss

of 31,902.46 points, or 81.89%?

(And yesterday, 23 January 2012, closed

at 8,785.33.)  So much for a world panic!

Now, I’m not suggesting the same will happen

with the Chinese economy, but this ‘old’ cartoon strikes

me as not entirely without contemporary relevance regarding today’s

fears in the West that very shortly the East will once more take over the world.

But isn’t a little fear useful to get the West out of complacency? To support education and science and apply new technologies?
